What is a CO2 fire extinguisher used for?
CO2 can be used on flammable liquids and on electrical fires but not on solid fires. They work by removing oxygen.
CO2 extinguishers are very widely used in UK businesses and are probably the most effective solution for tackling a fire where electricity is present.
CO2 / Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers
CO2 can fight Type B (flammable liquids) and electrical fires. It is an extremely clean extinguisher leaving virtually no residue after use. They are amazingly effective at fighting office-equipment fires as the gas can penetrate vents and casings to reach internal fires. They are an asphyxiant so should not be used in confined spaces.
As this type of extinguisher works by removing oxygen there is tendency for untrained users to presume they are ideal to use on solid fires too. Using CO2 on solid fires can disperse the fuels and create several fires.
Purchasing CO2 extinguishers
We supply two sizes – 2kg and 5kg. The 2kg is ideal for most commercial applications however where three-phase electrical is present then 5kg is normally required. All the extinguishers we supply are commissioned onsite and certificated for a year. They are mounted at the regulation height along with the mandatory ID / Instruction sign. Ongoing yearly maintenance / servicing contracts are available to ensure you continue to meet UK fire safety legislation.
When considering the question ‘What is a CO2 fire extinguisher used for?’ also remember this – When operating a CO2 extinguisher it is important to NOT hold the base of the extinguisher or the horn as they both eventually freeze. The blast from the horn is very loud and can shock a first-time user. However, UK legislation requires you to regularly train all staff who are authorised to use extinguishers.
